Rolling sound inspection of bearings

2023-09-08

Use a sound detector to check the size and sound quality of the rolling sound of the running bearing. Even if there is slight peeling or other damage to the bearing, abnormal and irregular sounds will be emitted, which can be distinguished using a sound detector.

Using auditory perception to identify irregular movements is a common method. For example, using an electronic stethoscope to detect abnormal noise in a certain part is often a method used by experienced operators.

If the bearing is in good continuous running condition, it will emit a low moaning sound. If sharp hissing, creaking, and other irregular sounds are emitted, it often indicates that the bearing is in poor continuous running condition.

Sharp squeaking noise may be caused by improper lubrication. Improper bearing clearance can also cause metallic noise. The dents on the concave track of the bearing outer ring track can cause vibration and create a smooth and crisp sound. If the impact marks caused during installation also produce noise, this noise will vary with the speed of the bearing.

If there is intermittent noise, it indicates that the rolling element may be damaged. This sound occurs when the damaged surface is rolled, and if there are pollutants inside the bearing, it often causes a hissing sound. Severe co bearing damage can produce irregular and loud noise.

Bearing damage can be detected by hearing, but usually it is already the time to replace the bearing immediately. Therefore, better methods such as using electronic condition monitoring instruments such as SKF are recommended. Compared to the old method of using a wooden stick or screwdriver to press against the bearing box and the other end against the ear, the new invention ensures a safer and more accurate estimation of the bearing condition
