Classification and application of thrust bearings

2023-07-19

Thrust bearings are specialized bearings designed to handle axial forces. They are composed of thrust washers, rolling elements, and retainers. Common types of thrust bearings include thrust ball bearings and thrust roller bearings.

The operating principles of thrust bearings are as follows:

Thrust Ball Bearings: They are a type of separable bearing consisting of shaft washers, housing washers, retainers, and ball components. The shaft washer is matched with the shaft and has a gap between them. Thrust ball bearings can only withstand axial loads. Uni-directional thrust ball bearings can handle axial loads in one direction, while bi-directional thrust ball bearings can handle axial loads in both directions. Thrust ball bearings do not restrict axial displacement and have a relatively low maximum rotational speed. Uni-directional thrust ball bearings can limit axial displacement in one direction and also restrict axial displacement in both directions.

Thrust Roller Bearings: They are primarily used to support significant axial loads and can also withstand certain radial loads, provided that the radial load does not exceed 55% of the axial load. Thrust roller bearings have a low friction coefficient and high speed capabilities. Compared to other types of thrust roller bearings, they offer good self-aligning performance. Common types of thrust roller bearings include thrust cylindrical roller bearings, thrust tapered roller bearings, thrust spherical roller bearings, and thrust needle roller bearings. Thrust roller bearings are usually lubricated with oil, although grease lubrication can be used in certain low-speed applications.

Thrust bearings can be classified as follows:

Thrust Ball Bearings and Angular Contact Thrust Ball Bearings: Mainly used in applications such as automotive steering mechanisms and machine tool spindles.

Thrust Roller Bearings:

Thrust Cylindrical Roller Bearings: Mainly used in applications such as oil drilling rigs. 81192M; 292/850;811/500M

Thrust Tapered Roller Bearings:  Mainly used in applications such as hydroelectric generators, vertical motors, ship propeller shafts, tower cranes, extruders, etc. (T-691)

Thrust Spherical Roller Bearings:  Mainly used in applications such as hydroelectric generators, vertical motors, ship propeller shafts, tower cranes, extruders, etc. (29360;29492;29496)

Thrust Needle Roller Bearings:  Mainly used in applications such as steel machinery.

Although the installation of thrust bearings is relatively simple, errors can still occur during practical maintenance. One common mistake is improper installation of the tight-fitting and loose-fitting rings, leading to bearing failure and journal wear. If the inner ring of the tight-fitting ring has a transitional fit with the journal, the tight-fitting ring will experience friction against the stationary component's end face when the shaft rotates. Under axial loads, a greater mating resistance torque than the inner diameter will be generated, causing the tight-fitting ring to forcibly rotate against the shaft mating surface and exacerbating journal wear. Therefore, when installing thrust bearings, it is important to ensure proper fits and appropriate lubrication to ensure their normal operation and service life.
