High carbon ferrochrome

Smelting process

The smelting methods of high carbon ferrochrome include blast furnace method, electric furnace method, plasma furnace method, etc. Special pig iron with chromium content of about 30% can only be produced by using blast furnace. As of 2012, most of the high carbon ferrochrome with high chromium content is smelted in submerged arc furnace by flux method.
The basic principle of smelting high carbon ferrochrome by electric furnace is to reduce chromium and iron oxides in chrome ore with carbon. The starting temperature of carbon reduction of chromium oxide to generate Cr2C2 is 1373K, the starting temperature of the reaction to generate Cr7C3 is 1403K, and the starting temperature of the reaction to generate chromium by reduction is 1523K. Therefore, when carbon reduction of chromium ore, chromium carbide is obtained instead of metal chromium. The carbon content in ferrochrome depends on the reaction temperature. It is easier to form carbides with high carbon content than carbides with low carbon content.
